California has the highest concentration of major entertainment destinations in the US — two Disney parks, the original Universal Studios, the oldest continuously operating seaside boardwalk in the country, and the festival grounds that host Coachella. Universal Studios Hollywood runs tram tours through a working 415-acre film backlot where productions are ongoing; Santa Cruz Beach Boardwalk has operated since 1907 with two National Historic Landmark rides still running. The Empire Polo Club in Indio hosts Coachella and Stagecoach back-to-back every April.

Theme Parks & Amusement Parks
Universal Studios Hollywood Must-see

Los Angeles County · Universal City
Universal Studios Hollywood covers 415 acres on a working film studio lot in Universal City — the tram tour through the backlot is the park's signature experience, passing Jaws Lake, the Bates Motel (Psycho), Wisteria Lane (Desperate Housewives set), and active sound stages where productions may be underway. The upper lot has signature rides: Harry Potter's Forbidden Journey (inside Hogwarts Castle), Jurassic World: The Ride, and Transformers: The Ride-3D. The lower lot connects by escalator with Super Nintendo World and Jurassic World roller coaster. Admission required; Universal Express passes skip standby lines. The park is at 100 Universal City Plaza, accessible by Metro Red/Purple Line (Universal City/Studio City station).
LEGOLAND California Resort Must-see

San Diego County · Carlsbad
LEGOLAND California in Carlsbad is the US flagship of the LEGO theme park chain — 60 rides and attractions across 128 acres designed primarily for ages 2–12. Miniland USA at the center of the park has scale-model replicas of New York City, Washington D.C., Las Vegas, New Orleans, and San Francisco built from 34 million LEGO bricks; the scale models are accurate to recognizable landmarks and can be viewed from a monorail that circles the park. The LEGO Star Wars Miniland uses 1.5 million bricks for scenes from all 9 films. Admission required; the Sea Life Aquarium at the entrance is a separate ticket. Carlsbad is 35 miles north of San Diego and 85 miles south of Los Angeles; free resort shuttles connect to Carlsbad Poinsettia station (Coaster train).
Santa Cruz Beach Boardwalk Must-see

Santa Cruz County · Santa Cruz
The Santa Cruz Beach Boardwalk has operated continuously since 1907 — the oldest surviving seaside amusement park on the West Coast. Two National Historic Landmarks operate daily: the Giant Dipper wooden roller coaster (1924), a 70-mph ride with 33 dips over 2,640 feet of track, and the Looff Carousel (1911), one of the oldest carousels in the country with 73 hand-carved horses. The boardwalk is open weekends year-round and daily June through September; entry is free, rides require individual tickets or an all-day wristband. Mini Golf, laser tag, and arcade games are additional. The adjacent Main Beach is Santa Cruz's widest and most central beach. The boardwalk is 32 miles south of San Jose and 75 miles south of San Francisco.
Festival Grounds & Live Venues
Coachella & Stagecoach Festival Grounds (Empire Polo Club) Must-see

Riverside County · Indio
The Empire Polo Club in Indio is a 78-acre festival site hosting Coachella Valley Music and Arts Festival and Stagecoach Country Music Festival on consecutive weekends every April. Coachella runs on Weekends 1 and 2 (identical lineups) in the second and third weeks of April; Stagecoach follows on the fourth weekend. Tickets require advance purchase; check current rates online. The installation art component of Coachella features large-scale commissioned pieces spread across the grounds — some have been acquired permanently by museums after the festival. Palm Springs is 8 miles west with the widest hotel inventory; Indio has hotels 2 miles from the venue. General admission taxi and rideshare shuttles run from both cities during festival weekends.
Golden 1 Center (Sacramento Kings Arena) Must-see

Sacramento County · Sacramento
Golden 1 Center opened in October 2016 as the home of the Sacramento Kings NBA team — and the first indoor arena to earn LEED Platinum certification. The 17,500-seat arena runs entirely on renewable energy from a local solar farm, and its natural ventilation system pulls outside air through 39-foot operable window panels using fans rather than conventional HVAC — a design only viable in Sacramento's dry climate. The arena is in downtown Sacramento's Downtown Commons (DOCO) plaza, adjacent to the historic K Street Mall. Kings games run October through April; major concerts fill the off-season schedule. Sacramento's light rail (Gold Line, 8th and K Street stop) is 2 blocks from the main entrance — no driving required from most downtown hotels.
Planning Notes
Plan your visit: Universal Studios Hollywood, Disneyland (Anaheim, 30 miles south), and LEGOLAND (Carlsbad, 90 miles south) form a Southern California theme park corridor best planned over 3–5 days. See our Los Angeles guide for hotels near Universal Studios. Santa Cruz Beach Boardwalk is 75 miles south of San Francisco and makes a strong day trip — see our San Francisco guide for Bay Area logistics.
