Most Texas road trips chase the big cities. The Hill Country loop — roughly 300 miles from Austin through Fredericksburg, Vanderpool, and Ingram — covers a pink granite dome that draws 250,000 hikers a year, 50 wineries along US-290, and a 90% scale replica of Stonehenge sitting in a field off TX-27. The route runs in 2–3 days and stays drivable year-round, though fall foliage at Lost Maples makes October–November the prime window.

Hamilton Pool and the Hill Country Gateway
The road west from Austin on US-290 hits its first serious stop 30 miles out at Hamilton Pool Preserve — a collapsed limestone grotto that requires a permit but is an easy win before the longer push to Fredericksburg.
Hamilton Pool Preserve Must-see

Travis County · Dripping Springs
Book a timed-entry permit at Travis County Parks before you leave Austin — the lot fills by 9 a.m. on weekends and day-of slots rarely open. The payoff is a collapsed grotto with a 50-foot waterfall feeding a jade-green swimming pool, sheltered under an overhanging limestone ledge draped in maidenhair fern. Swimming is allowed when water quality tests pass; Travis County posts current swim status on the reservation site. From the trailhead, the pool is a 0.25-mile walk. Budget 2–3 hours for the stop.
Fredericksburg: Wine Country and History
Fredericksburg sits 78 miles west of Austin on US-290 and makes the natural base for 1–2 nights. Two of Texas's most distinct attractions are here: a wine trail running through 50 vineyards and a WWII Pacific museum built in Nimitz's hometown.
Texas Hill Country Wine Trail Must-see

Gillespie County · Fredericksburg
The Wine Trail runs through Gillespie County's 50-plus vineyards, most clustered within 15 miles of Fredericksburg along US-290 East. Becker Vineyards and Grape Creek Vineyards are the largest operations, with full tasting rooms and seated flights. Tasting fees typically run $15–25 per person for five or six pours. Saturday afternoons draw the heaviest crowds — a Thursday or Friday arrival gives faster service and more winery time before closing. Save an evening for Main Street; Fredericksburg stays active after the tasting rooms close.
National Museum of the Pacific War Must-see

Gillespie County · Fredericksburg
The National Museum of the Pacific War covers the full Pacific Theater from Pearl Harbor through the Japanese surrender across 6 acres in Fredericksburg — Nimitz's hometown. One ticket includes the Admiral Nimitz Museum, the George H.W. Bush Gallery, and the Pacific Combat Zone, an outdoor battle diorama with full-scale aircraft, ships, and artillery pieces. Plan 3–4 hours; the exhibits run deeper than most visitors expect for a town this size. Tickets are available at the door or online; sellouts happen only on Pearl Harbor anniversary weekends in December.
Enchanted Rock State Natural Area
Eighteen miles north of Fredericksburg on Ranch Road 965, Enchanted Rock is the Hill Country's most-booked stop. Secure a permit ahead of time and plan to arrive early.
Enchanted Rock State Natural Area Must-see

Llano County · Fredericksburg
Enchanted Rock is a 425-acre pink granite dome in Llano County, rising 325 feet above the surrounding Hill Country — the summit sits at 1,825 feet elevation. The Summit Trail is 0.6 miles one-way; most hikers complete the out-and-back in under 2 hours. Timed-entry day-use permits go on sale 2 weeks in advance on the Texas State Parks website and sell out on most weekends within minutes of release. Set a calendar alert for the release date or plan a weekday visit instead. The parking lot holds 150 cars and turns away late arrivals when full.

Vanderpool: Lost Maples State Natural Area
From Fredericksburg, head 45 miles southwest on TX-16 and TX-187 into Bandera County. Lost Maples is the Hill Country's fall foliage draw — the park holds bigtooth maple trees that are rare this far south and pull visitors from across Texas in October and November.
Lost Maples State Natural Area Must-see

Bandera County · Vanderpool
Lost Maples protects 2,174 acres of Sabinal River canyon in Bandera County, holding a stand of bigtooth maple trees that turn red, orange, and gold in late October and early November. The East Trail (4.7 miles) and West Trail (4.0 miles) loop through the canyon with several river crossings — both are rated moderate with about 300 feet of elevation change. Weekend fall-foliage permits sell out 2–4 weeks in advance on the Texas State Parks website. Spring visits (March–April) bring wildflowers and no permit competition. The nearest town is Vanderpool, population under 50 — fill the tank in Kerrville before heading out.
Ingram and New Braunfels: Closing the Loop
From Vanderpool, TX-39 east through Ingram drops you onto I-10 and back toward San Antonio or Austin. Two stops break up the return leg.
Stonehenge II Must-see

Kerr County · Ingram
Stonehenge II is a 90% scale replica of the Wiltshire monument, built by a local landowner in 1989 and relocated to the Hill Country Arts Foundation grounds in Ingram in 2010. The replica stands 10 feet tall and 40 feet in diameter, flanked by two Easter Island–style moai heads built by the same artist. The Foundation grounds are open during daylight hours at no charge, with parking off TX-27. The stop takes about 20 minutes — long enough to walk the perimeter and photograph from all angles.
Buc-ee's (New Braunfels — original mega-store) Must-see

Comal County · New Braunfels
The New Braunfels Buc-ee's opened in 2003 as the original mega-format store that launched the chain's national expansion. The building covers 67,000 square feet with 120 gas pumps, 80 restroom stalls, and a food operation running Texas-style brisket sandwiches, fresh kolaches, and the chain's signature beaver nuggets. It sits on I-35 at exit 189 — a natural final refueling stop on the return leg to Austin or San Antonio. Budget 20–30 minutes if you plan to shop; the brisket line moves efficiently even on weekends.
Planning Notes
Where to stay: Fredericksburg has 40-plus bed-and-breakfast properties on and near Main Street, making it the natural overnight base for this route. Book 4–8 weeks ahead for any fall weekend — foliage season fills the town. Kerrville and New Braunfels offer chain hotel options for travelers who want lower nightly rates.
Book ahead: Hamilton Pool Preserve requires a timed-entry permit from Travis County Parks. Enchanted Rock day-use permits go on sale 2 weeks in advance on the Texas State Parks website and sell out on weekends within minutes. Lost Maples fall-foliage weekend permits sell out 2–4 weeks ahead — midweek dates are almost always available.
Getting around: A rental car is required for this route — no public transit connects these stops. The loop runs Austin → Dripping Springs → Fredericksburg → Enchanted Rock → Vanderpool → Ingram → New Braunfels, totaling about 300 miles. Add 30 miles if you return to Austin rather than ending in San Antonio.
