Corpus Christi has two distinct draws rarely found in the same coastal city: 70 miles of undeveloped Gulf barrier island on Padre Island National Seashore and a compact downtown waterfront with two major museums within walking distance of each other. The two are 15 miles apart — easy to cover in the same day trip or during a two-day stay on the Texas Gulf Coast.

Padre Island National Seashore Must-see

Kleberg County · Corpus Christi
Padre Island National Seashore protects 70 miles of Gulf barrier island — the longest undeveloped stretch of barrier island coastline in the United States. The paved road reaches Malaquite Beach, 5 miles from the entrance; beyond that, only high-clearance 4WD vehicles can continue south. A 7-day vehicle pass costs $15. From April through July, Kemp's ridley sea turtle hatchlings emerge on the beach — the National Park Service runs public turtle releases when conditions allow, announced same-day on its social channels. Over 380 bird species have been recorded in the park, including significant concentrations during spring migration through the Coastal Bend.

Downtown Waterfront
Corpus Christi Bayfront Must-see

Nueces County · Corpus Christi
The downtown Bayfront runs along Shoreline Boulevard with views across Corpus Christi Bay toward Padre Island. Two major attractions anchor the waterfront: the USS Lexington, a WWII Essex-class aircraft carrier now open as a museum ($17 adults), and the Texas State Aquarium next door, with over 4,000 animals including bottlenose dolphins, river otters, and a Caribbean Journey exhibit ($42 adults). The Bayfront Heritage Park between the two has free access and hosts outdoor concerts and festivals throughout the year. Both museums are walkable from downtown hotels and share a free surface parking lot.
Planning Notes
Where to stay: Downtown hotels on Shoreline Boulevard put you within walking distance of the USS Lexington and Texas State Aquarium. For beach access, hotels on North Padre Island are 15 miles from downtown but within 5 minutes of the National Seashore entrance.
Book ahead: Texas State Aquarium and USS Lexington tickets can be purchased at the door, but online tickets save $2–$3 per person and skip the counter. Sea turtle release events at Padre Island have no advance booking — follow the National Park Service Padre Island social channels for same-day announcements.
Getting around: Downtown Corpus Christi is walkable between the USS Lexington and the Aquarium. Padre Island National Seashore requires a car — 15 miles from downtown via South Padre Island Drive (TX-358). Beyond Malaquite Beach, a high-clearance 4WD vehicle is required to continue south along the island.
