Siesta Key Beach is a barrier island shoreline where the sand is composed of 99% pure quartz crystal — the same material as window glass — which reflects heat rather than absorbing it, keeping the sand cool to the touch even in 95-degree summer heat. The main public access is Siesta Beach Park, with 800 free parking spaces, volleyball courts, restrooms, and a snack bar.
Arrive before 9am on summer weekends to guarantee a parking spot — the lot fills completely by mid-morning. The water is shallow and clear, reaching 3 feet depth at roughly 50 yards out, and stays warm enough to swim from May through October. The beach stretches 0.65 miles along the Gulf and is widest at the main park entrance.

Myakka River State Park Must-see

Myakka River State Park covers 58 square miles (37,000 acres) along the Myakka River — a footprint large enough to contain two freshwater lakes, 39 miles of hiking trails, and 11 miles of paddling routes. Upper Myakka Lake hosts a commercial airboat tour (30 minutes, $16/adult) that reliably spots American alligators, roseate spoonbills, and great blue herons — the lake supports more than 150 resident gators year-round. The park also features a 100-foot canopy walkway above the river floodplain.
Vehicle entry is $6. The park has 39 miles of hiking trails, 11 miles of canoe and kayak routes on the Myakka River, and a campground with 76 sites. Airboat tours sell out on weekends — reserve online before you arrive. The park entrance is 13 miles east of downtown Sarasota on SR-72.
History & Museums
The Ringling — Museum of Art, Circus Museum & Ca' d'Zan Must-see

John Ringling, co-owner of the Ringling Bros. circus empire, built his winter estate on Sarasota Bay in 1926. The complex he left to Florida upon his death in 1936 now includes three distinct experiences on 66 acres: the Museum of Art (30 galleries including the largest collection of Peter Paul Rubens paintings in the US), the Circus Museum (covering the full history of American circus from the 1800s onward), and Ca' d'Zan — his 21-room Venetian Gothic mansion with original 1920s furnishings.
General admission is $25 for adults and $10 for Florida students with ID. Ca' d'Zan guided tours are an additional $10 and sell out on weekends — add the tour when purchasing your main ticket online. Budget 3–4 hours to cover all three components. The complex is 5 miles from Siesta Key Beach, making it possible to pair both in one day.
Planning Notes
Where to stay: Downtown Sarasota hotels on Main Street and US-41 put you 8 miles from Siesta Key Beach and 5 miles from The Ringling — a practical base for both. Siesta Key Village has vacation rentals and small hotels directly on the key if beach proximity is the priority.
Book ahead: Ca' d'Zan guided tours at The Ringling sell out on weekends — add them when purchasing museum admission online. Myakka River airboat tours fill by mid-morning on weekends; reserve the day before. Siesta Key Beach parking fills before 9am on summer weekends — arrive early or park in Siesta Key Village and walk 10 minutes to the main beach.
Getting around: A car is necessary for Sarasota — there is no public transit between downtown, Siesta Key Beach, Myakka, and The Ringling. The three attractions span 15 miles. Siesta Key Beach and The Ringling (5 miles apart) pair well in one day; save Myakka for its own morning given the 13-mile drive from downtown.
